Guns, Germs & Steel

Today in class we continued to watch the movie called Guns, Germs & Steel. We talked about how the people in Papau New Guinea needed to find a more effective way to store there food since meat and such do not last long. When you do not have an effective way to store your food then there is a constant need to hunt and gather food. We also learned that there was an a man that found the oldest known civilization and talked about the ways that they stored their food and how that makes a civilization successful. We also ended up talking about how in more industrialized countries there are scientists that actually modify the food and breed it for different uses. So far I think this video is pretty interesting and I like learning about the people from different places and how their lives differ from my own.

Socrates and Sophists like Protagorus would have started questioning traditional beliefs at this particular point in history for a few reasons. Socrates, first started by standing his ground about the the crime of the Athenians sailing back to Athens without picking up any of the soldiers that had fallen overboard. Plato's Allegory of the Cave

Today in class we talked about Plato's allegory of the Cave. We learned about the three parts of the allegory: setting the scene, the three stages of liberation, and the prisoner returns to the cave. In the first section, setting the scene, it explained that there were prisoners in a cave that had been in there since childbirth so they know no different. The prisoners are shackled up and cannot move. They are forced to stare at one wall and there are people that hold up objects which create shadows that the prisoners are forced to look at.In the second part, the three stages of liberation, one prisoner was released out of the cave and into the real world. At first it was painful for the prisoner to look at the light and they had to get accustomed to it. Then they were able to look at the sun itself and know that it had a lot of power and was in charge of the seasons and governs everything in sunlight. Alexander and Bucephalus

Today we were assigned to research about the relationship between Alexander the Great and his horse Bucephalus. I found a lot of information about them and their special relationship. I found that they were inseparable and that Alexander was the only one that could ride him. Alexander met Bucephalus  when he was brought to Macedonia and presented to Alexander's father. Everyone thought that the horse was wild, and Alexander's father wanted him to be sent away. Alexander went against his father and stood up and asked to keep him. He approached the horse and named him. Alexander found out why Bucephalus was acting so crazy and that was because he was afraid of his own shadow. Alexander mounted him right there and rode him away. Starting from that first day when Bucephalus and Alexander met they had a unique relationship and went through many battles together and ended up dying after the Battle of Hydaspes River.
