Crucible of Civilization episode 1 cont.

Today in class we restarted the video and figured out how to watch it together as a class. Our sub played the video for us and we watched it together and took some notes. The video is about ancient Greece and how the civilization came to be. It focused on the war between Athens and Sparta. It was not thought that the Greeks would win, but they beat the Persians. They slaughtered over 6,000 Persians in one day. The important thing about the Athenians is that they wanted to keep their democracy alive. An important battle that was fought was the battle at Marathon. Thamistaclies was known as one of Athens greatest leaders. He realized that the battle between the Persians was not over and that they had to be prepared. He created the trireme, which was a weapon itself that caused the Greeks to become even better at naval battle. When the Persian king Darius the Great died, his son took over. He was determined to burn Athens and he said he would not stop until it was done. News got back to Athens about this and they were warned that the Persian army had set out for Greece. The plan was to avoid the Persians on land and fight them on sea. Everyone was ordered to evacuate Athens, and all ships had to gather at Salamis. The Persians entered the city and burned all the temples to the ground. It was devastating for the Athenians to watch their home be burnt to the ground. There was a message sent to the Persians that said the Athenians were scared, and they were on the sea and the Athenians were prepared in a battle line that the Persian fleet had been lured into. When the battle was over the Persians had lost many ships and the Athenians come out in victory, The democracy in Athens was still strong and it gave them an advantage that other cultures could not match. They protected this democracy at all costs.
